About Us
We are a 4th generation independent family business, owned and run by the Howcroft family.
The company was founded by Tom Howcroft around 1918 as a joinery and cabinet making business.
As was the usual thing people came to the joiner to supply a coffin when there had been a bereavement, so the logical thing to do was to begin carrying out the funerals.
Tom was joined by his sons Jack and Geoffrey as the company expanded into building work.
When Jack retired his son Roger came into the business; this was about the time the company decided to cease joinery and building work and concentrate on funerals.
Roger's daughter Vicki then joined the business and Geoffrey retired.
In 1999 the first non family member, Nigel Lambert joined the company as the company became busier. In 2006 Roger became semi retired and Philip Dicken joined the company.
A further member of staff, Steve Thornthwaite was appointed in December 2010 as a trainee Funeral Director.
Roger and Vicki are both B.I.E members and hold the Diploma in Funeral Directing.
